Living beside Waduk Melati: what a reservoir view means in the middle of Jakarta
What Waduk Melati actually is
Waduk Melati is a retention reservoir behind Thamrin City. Local reports describe it as taking water from Kali Cideng, Kali Menteng Bawah, Kali Gresik and the drains of the Thamrin business district, and Jakarta’s urban design guidelines (Pergub DKI 2/2012) treat the surrounding Kebon Melati area as a district to be planned around the water. On a map it sits about 50 metres from the 57 Promenade address.
That matters because a reservoir like this is a piece of the city’s plumbing first and a landscape second. It keeps rain and runoff from flooding Thamrin, which is useful if you live next to it.
What it changes day to day
- The view. Open water means no tower directly in front of you on that side, so the skyline stays open for a long stretch.
- The ground floor. The development’s promenade runs along the water, with a jogging track, a children’s playground and al-fresco dining. It is the part of the project you will use every day, whichever floor you live on.
- The walk. In a district of wide roads, a path that follows water is a rare way to cover the last few hundred metres to the malls and the MRT.
What to ask before you rely on it
- Which units actually face the water, and from which floors the view clears the neighbouring buildings.
- How the reservoir is cleaned and managed. Reports over the years describe litter and water hyacinth being cleared, so ask what the situation is now.
- What the finished promenade will look like once phase 2 (offices, a serviced-apartment tower and a retail promenade on the 3.2-hectare site) is built.
Our honest take
If you want green, still water for the view and a place to walk without crossing a six-lane road, this is one of the more interesting addresses in Central Jakarta. If you imagine a lake you can swim in or a quiet resort, it will disappoint. Walk the promenade in the morning and at dusk before you decide.
