Hospitals and international schools near 57 Promenade: what families and expats need to know
Which hospitals can you reach quickly?
When you are choosing where to live, hospital proximity matters in two different ways. The first is the emergency scenario — chest pain at 2 a.m., a child's broken arm — where what counts is how quickly an ambulance can reach you and how quickly you can reach an emergency department. The second is the routine scenario — a GP visit, a dental check, a follow-up with a specialist — where what counts is whether you can get there and back without losing half a day.
From 57 Promenade, the emergency scenario is well covered. You are in central Jakarta, surrounded by hospitals. The routine scenario depends on which hospital you use and what kind of care you expect.
| Hospital | Distance | Drive time | Notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| RSU Tanah Abang | 930 m | ≈ 5 min | Government hospital; general care; Bahasa Indonesia |
| RS Husada | 1.5 km | ≈ 8 min | Private; general care |
| RS Abdi Waluyo | 1.8 km | ≈ 10 min | Private; English-speaking doctors; expat-friendly |
| RS St. Carolus | 2.0 km | ≈ 10 min | Catholic hospital; good reputation; general + specialist |
| Siloam Hospitals MRCCC Semanggi | 2.2 km | ≈ 12 min | International standard; 24/7 ER; oncology centre |

| RS MMC (Metropolitan Medical Centre) | 2.3 km | ≈ 12 min | Private; Kuningan area; international insurance accepted |
Distances are straight-line from 57 Promenade. Drive times assume normal traffic (off-peak); expect 1.5–2× during rush hour.
Which hospitals do expats actually use?
If you carry international health insurance and expect English-speaking doctors, your practical shortlist narrows to three or four hospitals. Here is what you need to know about each.
Siloam Hospitals MRCCC Semanggi (2.2 km). This is the hospital most commonly recommended to expats in central Jakarta. Siloam is a large private hospital chain with JCI accreditation (the international standard). The MRCCC Semanggi branch, on Jl. Garnisun Dalam, has a 24-hour emergency department, a comprehensive oncology centre, and specialist clinics covering cardiology, orthopaedics, neurology and more. Most doctors speak English. International insurance — Cigna, Allianz, AXA, BUPA — is widely accepted. The drive from 57 Promenade takes about 12 minutes in normal traffic, more during rush hour.
RS Abdi Waluyo (1.8 km). A private hospital in Menteng, known for its English-speaking staff and expat-friendly service. It is smaller than Siloam but handles general care, minor emergencies, and specialist consultations well. Abdi Waluyo is a good choice for routine visits — GP check-ups, dental, blood work — because it is closer, less crowded, and the service is personal.
RS St. Carolus (2.0 km). A Catholic hospital in Salemba with a long history in Jakarta. St. Carolus is well-regarded for maternity care, paediatrics, and general surgery. It is not as modern as Siloam's newest facilities, but the medical staff is experienced and the hospital has a loyal following among long-term Jakarta residents. English is spoken by most senior doctors.
RSUPN Dr. Cipto Mangunkusumo (2.5 km). This is Indonesia's national referral hospital — the largest and most comprehensive medical facility in the country. It is a teaching hospital affiliated with the University of Indonesia's medical school. You would not use Cipto for routine care (it is busy, bureaucratic, and primarily Bahasa Indonesia), but it is where you go for the most complex cases. If a specialist at a private hospital recommends a second opinion or a procedure they cannot perform, Cipto is often the referral destination.
What about clinics and GP visits?
For minor ailments — a cold, a skin rash, a prescription refill — you do not need a hospital. Jakarta has a network of private clinics and GP practices that handle routine care faster and more affordably. Several sit within easy reach of 57 Promenade:
- Mall-based clinics. Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia both have health and dental clinics. These are convenient for quick visits — vaccinations, dental cleanings, basic blood tests — and many accept walk-ins.
- Hotel-based clinics. Some of the nearby five-star hotels (Kempinski, Mandarin Oriental) have in-house medical services or partnerships with private clinics. These tend to be expensive but offer English-language service and minimal waiting.
- Menteng GP practices. Several English-speaking general practitioners operate from private clinics in Menteng, about 1.5–2 km east. These are a good option for families who want a regular doctor — someone who knows your medical history and can refer you appropriately when needed.
If you have international insurance, check your provider's network before you arrive. Most international policies have preferred hospitals and clinics in Jakarta, and using in-network providers simplifies billing.
What about international schools?
This is where the central Jakarta location shows its trade-off. International schools in Jakarta are clustered in the south — Cilandak, Pondok Indah, Kebayoran — not in Thamrin. No international school sits within walking distance of 57 Promenade. All require a commute.
| School | Curriculum | Distance | Drive (off-peak) | Area |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Jakarta Intercultural School (JIS) | IB / American | 4.2 km | ≈ 15–25 min | Cilandak |
| British School Jakarta (BSJ) | British / IGCSE / A-Level | 14 km | ≈ 35–50 min | Bintaro |
| Australian Independent School (AIS) | Australian / IB | 12 km | ≈ 30–45 min | Kemang |
| Gandhi Memorial International School | IB / Indian | 5.5 km | ≈ 18–30 min | Kemayoran |
Drive times vary significantly with traffic. Morning school runs (6:30–7:30 a.m.) are faster than afternoon pick-ups (2:30–4:00 p.m.).
Is the school commute realistic from Thamrin?
It depends on which school and how you manage the logistics.
JIS (Cilandak) — 4.2 km. This is the most accessible international school from 57 Promenade. The drive south on Gatot Subroto takes 15–25 minutes in the morning (school starts at 7:45–8:00 a.m., so the 6:30 a.m. departure catches lighter traffic). JIS runs its own school bus service, which picks up from designated stops along the Thamrin-Sudirman corridor. If the school bus route serves your area — confirm with JIS admissions — this is the most practical daily option.
BSJ (Bintaro) — 14 km. This is a longer commute and the one that most central Jakarta families worry about. Bintaro is in south Tangerang, and the drive crosses the Jakarta-Tangerang border via the JORR toll road. In the morning, 35–40 minutes is realistic. In the afternoon, especially on Fridays, it can stretch to 50–60 minutes. BSJ also runs school buses, and many families rely on a driver.
AIS (Kemang) — 12 km. Kemang is south Jakarta, reachable via the inner ring road. The commute is 30–40 minutes in the morning. Kemang itself can be congested — the neighbourhood has narrow roads and limited access points — so afternoon pick-ups can be slow.
The honest answer: if your children attend JIS, the commute from Thamrin is manageable — especially with the school bus. If they attend BSJ or AIS, you are looking at a meaningful daily commute that will require a driver or a committed school-bus schedule. Many expat families with children at BSJ choose to live in south Jakarta (Pondok Indah, Kebayoran, Cipete) specifically to shorten that commute.
What about local and national-plus schools?
If international school is not a requirement — or if you are open to "national-plus" schools that teach in English but follow a localised curriculum — your options within central Jakarta improve significantly. Several national-plus and bilingual schools operate in the Menteng and Cikini areas, within 2–3 km of 57 Promenade. These schools are more affordable than full international schools (which typically run USD 15,000–30,000+ per year) and offer a mix of Indonesian and international approaches.
The trade-off is the credential. If your family moves frequently and your children need a globally recognised transcript (IB, IGCSE, A-Level) that transfers seamlessly to the next country, a full international school is the safer bet. If you are in Jakarta for the long term and want your children to engage with Indonesian culture and language, a national-plus school may be the better fit.
Our honest take
Healthcare access from 57 Promenade is a genuine strength. Multiple hospitals within 2 km, international-standard facilities within 12 minutes, English-speaking doctors available — this is one of the most medically convenient locations in Jakarta. For a single professional or a couple, it is hard to find fault with the healthcare position.
Schools are the weaker point, and you should know that before you sign a lease. No international school is within walking distance, and the best-regarded ones (JIS, BSJ, AIS) require a car commute. JIS is the most practical at 4.2 km, and its school bus service makes it workable. BSJ at 14 km is a daily commitment that many families find wearing over the course of a school year.
If you are a family with school-age children and you are choosing between Thamrin and south Jakarta, the school commute is the deciding factor — not the hospitals, not the malls, not the MRT. Visit the school first, check the bus routes, and then decide whether the 57 Promenade location works for your family's daily schedule.
