Cafés near 57 Promenade: Menteng, Thamrin and Sarinah — an honest guide
What kinds of coffee places are around here?
Central Jakarta's café scene splits into three distinct zones, and living at 57 Promenade puts you at the intersection of all three. Each has a different character, a different price point, and a different crowd. Here is how they break down.
Zone 1: The Thamrin Nine podium and Agora Mall (under 300 m). This is your ground floor. The Thamrin Nine complex — the same development that houses Pan Pacific Jakarta — has food and beverage tenants at podium level, including Fore Coffee at about 140 metres from the 57 Promenade lobby. Agora Mall, the retail component of Thamrin Nine, adds more options. These are the cafés you will use on autopilot — the ones you visit in flip-flops because they are closer than your kitchen is far.
Zone 2: Grand Indonesia and Plaza Indonesia (400–640 m). The two malls that anchor the Bundaran HI roundabout hold dozens of cafés between them. Grand Indonesia's East Mall and West Mall have Starbucks, % Arabica, Kenangan, Kopi Janji Jiwa, and a rotating cast of Indonesian specialty brands. Plaza Indonesia skews slightly more upmarket — expect higher prices, quieter seating, and a clientele that is there for the air conditioning as much as the espresso. This zone is a 6–9 minute walk; you will use it for meetings, working sessions, and when you want variety.
Zone 3: Menteng (1–2 km east). Cross Jl. M.H. Thamrin and head east into the leafy streets of Menteng, and the café landscape changes completely. Menteng is old Jakarta — tree-lined residential streets, colonial-era houses converted into restaurants, and a pace that feels different from the tower district. This is where you will find independent specialty roasters, brunch places with courtyards, and the kind of cafés where people sit for three hours with a laptop. The walk is 15–25 minutes or a 5-minute Grab ride.
Where do residents actually go for coffee every day?
There is a difference between the café you visit on a Saturday afternoon and the café you visit every weekday morning before a 9 a.m. call. For daily coffee — quick, close, reliable — 57 Promenade residents are most likely to gravitate toward these patterns:
- Fore Coffee (Thamrin Nine) — 140 m, 2 min. Indonesia's largest specialty coffee chain. Good espresso drinks at mall-chain prices (roughly Rp 30,000–45,000 for a latte). Fast service, app ordering, minimal seating. This is your weekday morning default.
- Grand Indonesia food hall — 410 m, 6 min. The lower ground floor has a food hall with multiple coffee counters, including Kopi Kenangan and Janji Jiwa. Prices are lower (Rp 18,000–28,000 range). This is where you go when you want coffee with lunch.
- Starbucks Reserve (Plaza Indonesia) — 640 m, 9 min. One of the larger Starbucks Reserve locations in Jakarta. Comfortable seating, reliable Wi-Fi, and the kind of controlled environment where you can take a video call without background noise. Prices are Starbucks prices — Rp 55,000–80,000 for a specialty drink.
For meetings and working sessions, Plaza Indonesia's upper-floor cafés tend to be quieter than Grand Indonesia's, which can get loud during lunch hours and weekends. If you need to sit for four hours with a laptop, Plaza Indonesia is the better choice.
What about the Menteng café scene?
Menteng deserves its own section because it is a different experience. The neighbourhood sits about 1.5 km east of 57 Promenade — too far for a casual walk in the midday heat, but an easy 5-minute Grab ride or a pleasant 20-minute walk in the early morning or evening.
The character is different from the tower district. Menteng was Jakarta's first planned residential neighbourhood, laid out in the 1920s during the Dutch colonial era. The streets are wider, the trees are older, and many cafés occupy converted houses with gardens. The vibe is closer to a Southeast Asian version of a European neighbourhood café than to a mall food court.
What you will find in Menteng:
- Specialty single-origin coffee. Menteng is where Jakarta's serious coffee drinkers go. Several roasters here work directly with Indonesian farms — Sumatran Mandheling, Torajan, Flores, Bali Kintamani. If you care about the bean, you will end up in Menteng regularly.
- Brunch culture. Weekend brunch is a Menteng institution. Expect eggs Benedict, avocado toast, açaí bowls, and a crowd that arrives at 10 a.m. and stays until 2 p.m. Prices are higher than mall cafés — Rp 80,000–150,000 for brunch with a coffee — but the ambiance justifies it.
- Garden seating. Several Menteng cafés have genuine outdoor seating in converted house gardens. This is unusual for central Jakarta, where most outdoor seating means a mall terrace. If you miss trees and birdsong with your coffee, Menteng is where you find it.
- Quiet working spaces. Weekday mornings in Menteng are significantly quieter than the mall cafés. If you work remotely and want a change of scenery from your apartment, a Menteng café on a Tuesday morning is a good option.
The trade-off is distance and transport. You will not walk to Menteng on a whim at 2 p.m. in July. You will plan it, call a Grab, and make an outing of it. That is fine — it becomes a different kind of ritual from the daily lobby-to-Fore-Coffee run.
What about Sarinah?
Sarinah, the historic department store on Jl. M.H. Thamrin, reopened in 2022 after a major renovation. The building — about 750 metres north of 57 Promenade — was reinvented as a curated retail and food destination, with a strong emphasis on Indonesian brands, local designers, and food vendors.
The ground and upper floors now hold a rotating selection of Indonesian coffee brands, artisan food stalls, and concept stores. The rooftop has event space and a bar. Sarinah is not a traditional café destination in the way Menteng is, but it has become a place where you go for a specific experience — browsing local fashion, picking up Indonesian specialty foods, and having a coffee in a setting that feels intentionally curated rather than accidentally commercial.
For 57 Promenade residents, Sarinah is a 10-minute walk north along Thamrin. The route is the same as the walk to Bundaran HI MRT, so you pass it anyway on the way to the station. It is worth visiting once to calibrate your expectations, and then returning when the mood suits.
How do café prices compare across these zones?
| Zone | Typical latte | Brunch + coffee | Character |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thamrin Nine / Agora Mall | Rp 30,000–45,000 | Rp 60,000–90,000 | Convenient, fast, functional |
| Grand Indonesia | Rp 25,000–55,000 | Rp 70,000–120,000 | Wide variety, busy, air-conditioned |
| Plaza Indonesia | Rp 45,000–80,000 | Rp 90,000–150,000 | Quieter, more upmarket |
| Sarinah | Rp 30,000–50,000 | Rp 65,000–100,000 | Curated, Indonesian brands |
| Menteng | Rp 35,000–65,000 | Rp 80,000–150,000 | Specialty, garden seating, slower |
Prices are approximate ranges based on typical menu items. Individual cafés vary.
Is this a good neighbourhood for someone who cares about coffee?
Yes, with a caveat. The immediate surroundings of 57 Promenade — the Thamrin Nine podium, Grand Indonesia, Plaza Indonesia — give you convenience and variety. You will never struggle to find a decent coffee within a 10-minute walk. The chains are reliable, the mall cafés are plentiful, and the Thamrin corridor is one of the most café-dense strips in Jakarta.
What you will not find within easy walking distance is the independent, artisan, "third wave" café culture that exists in Menteng, Kemang, or parts of south Jakarta. That requires a short ride. This is not a shortcoming of the location — it is the nature of a central business district, where retail space is expensive and chains outbid independents for ground-floor leases.
If your ideal morning is a 3-minute walk to a reliable espresso before work, this location is excellent. If your ideal morning is a 20-minute wander through quiet streets to a roaster you found on Instagram, Menteng is your weekend destination and the weekday version lives on your Grab app.
Our honest take
The café density around 57 Promenade is genuinely high. Seventy-eight places within a kilometre means you could visit a different café every week for a year and a half. In practice, you will settle into three or four regulars within the first month — a daily quick stop, a weekend working café, a meeting spot, and a Menteng favourite for when you want something different.
The one thing to watch is that mall cafés in Jakarta can be noisy, especially on weekends. If you need quiet, go early or go to Plaza Indonesia rather than Grand Indonesia. And if you find yourself craving the Menteng garden-café experience more than once a week, consider it a sign that you are settling into Jakarta properly.
The coffee here is good. It is not Copenhagen or Melbourne — it is Jakarta, which has its own thriving specialty coffee culture built on some of the best beans in the world. Give the local roasters a chance alongside the chains, and you will find more depth than you expected.
